How to Plan a Surprise Proposal in St Augustine With Lee Photo + Video

Hi, I'm Sydney — the photographer behind Lee Photo + Video, and I am so excited for you! I've spent over a decade documenting love stories all across St. Augustine, and I'd be honored to help tell yours. Consider this your start-to-finish guide, and know I'm here for anything you need along the way.

First things first — congratulations. Deciding to propose is one of the biggest, happiest things you'll ever do, and if you're feeling a little overwhelmed about pulling it off, take a breath. You don't need to have it all figured out, and you definitely don't need to know your way around St. Augustine.

We've documented love stories all over this city, so we know the quiet corners, the good light, and how to stay invisible until the big "yes." Below is everything you need, step by step — plus our favorite spots and the best time of day for each one.

The Plan

How to Plan Your Proposal, Step by Step

1

Start With the Two of You

Before anything else, picture your partner in the moment. The "perfect" proposal isn't about grand or small — it's about what feels like them.

  • Private or public? Would they melt at a quiet, just-the-two-of-you moment, or light up with a crowd cheering?
  • A meaningful place? Somewhere you had a first date, a favorite trip, an inside joke — that always beats "impressive but random."
  • Anyone else there? Some people want family hiding nearby; others want it to be only theirs (more on that below).

Quick Proposal Checklist

  • Pick your style — private, public, or a true surprise
  • Choose a location that feels like you two
  • Decide who's involved, if anyone
  • Have the ring, or at least a plan for it
  • Lock in a date and time of day
  • Sketch a backup plan for weather
2

The Ring

If you're proposing with a ring, the trickiest part is usually the size. A few discreet ways to figure it out:

  • Borrow one they already wear and measure it against a sizing guide.
  • Enlist a trusted friend or family member who can ask casually.
  • When in doubt, pick a setting that's easy to resize and adjust it later, together.

Don't let ring stress steal the joy — a slightly-off size is a five-minute fix at any jeweler.

3

Choose Your Spot

Proposing is a little like real estate: location, location, location. You'll both remember exactly where you were standing for the rest of your lives, so it's worth a little thought.

If you don't know St. Augustine, don't sweat it — we've pulled together our favorite spots further down this page, from hushed waterfront chapels to grand courtyards. Tell us your vibe and we'll help you match it to the right corner of the city.

4

Choose Your Time

This is where a little local know-how really pays off. In St. Augustine, morning is almost always the answer — and here's why.

Our Golden Rule: Go in the Morning

Downtown St. Augustine is still sleepy around 9–10am, so you'll have the streets and courtyards nearly to yourselves — no crowds wandering through your moment, and clean, people-free photos. And in spring and summer, mornings dodge the afternoon thunderstorms Florida is famous for. Year-round, the early hours are the safest, quietest, most beautiful window.

Waterfront spots — the Mission grounds, the Fort, Vilano Beach — are especially magic at sunrise, when the light comes up over the water right behind you for that warm, glowy look.

Real Talk About Sunset in Spring & Summer

I'll be straight with you: from late spring through summer, booking a sunset proposal in Florida is a gamble. Those months bring near-daily pop-up storms that build in the afternoon and roll through in the evening — and in my experience, it's close to a coin flip, roughly a 50/50 chance it's raining right at your scheduled sunset time. So for spring and summer, I highly recommend going in the morning. If your heart is set on sunset (and in the cooler months, it's genuinely gorgeous), build in a safety net: keep the next morning open as a built-in reschedule window in case a storm rolls in, or have a backup spot you love just as much.

5

Decide What to Say

You don't need a perfect speech. They'll remember the feeling, not the exact words. Still, it helps not to be fumbling in the moment, so jot down a few notes.

  • Speak from the heart — start with a memory, then let it lead where it's going.
  • Nervous? A short written note or letter can carry the moment beautifully.
  • Don't over-script it. Leave room to just be present.
6

Have It Photographed (Here's How I Fit In)

You're putting all this thought in — it's worth capturing. As your photographer, I do far more than show up with a camera: I help plan the logistics, position myself to catch the real reaction, and stay invisible until the big moment. When couples reach out to me, the first thing I ask is how they want me to fit into the day. There are two ways to play it:

  • The "couples session" cover story. I'm introduced ahead of time as a photographer you booked for fun couple photos. It's the low-stress option, great for wide-open spots, and easy to disguise — I can prompt your partner to turn one way while you drop to one knee. The catch: if they're already a little suspicious, a surprise photo session can tip them off.
  • Fully hidden. I stay completely out of sight until after you've asked. The surprise stays airtight and the reaction is 100% genuine. This one takes a bit more coordination — we'll map out exactly where you'll each be standing so I can catch their face from the right angle while staying tucked away.

Either way, we plan the details together first: where exactly you want to pop the question, and how you'd like the moment cued. I usually give a subtle signal and wait for your thumbs-up before it all unfolds, and for trickier spots we can even scout the location together beforehand so nothing's left to chance.

Then they say yes — and the celebrating begins. We can roll right into a mini engagement session while you're both still glowing. A few fun things to bring along: champagne to pop (grab two, in case the first one's a flop), sparklers, or a little picnic to land the whole thing.

Want it filmed too? Video can be added as a second storyteller for the moment.

7

Logistics & Backup Plan

Don't let little details derail the big moment. A few things to lock down:

  • Anchor it to an activity. "We have a photo session at 9" works far better than "let's go stand in that park right now."
  • Check access. A few spots (private campuses, working churches, sacred grounds) have hours or rules — we'll help you confirm before you plan around them.
  • Have a weather Plan B you're equally excited about, or keep the next morning open to reschedule.
  • Coordinate outfits without tipping them off — instead of "dress nice," just tell them what you're wearing.
  • Hydrate and breathe. Passing out is not part of the plan. You've got this.
Quick Tips

Do's & Don'ts

Do

  • Plan around a real reason to be there, on time.
  • Tell only the people who truly need to know.
  • Pick a spot your photographer can work with — good light, room to stay hidden.
  • Think about how your partner will feel, not just how it looks.

Don't

  • Keep your partner (or photographer) waiting with no cover story.
  • Spill the surprise to too many people.
  • Choose a spot that's impossible to photograph or impossibly crowded.
  • Let ring or weather worries overshadow the moment.
Where to Propose

The Best Places to Propose in St. Augustine

Brand new to the city? Start here. These are our go-to proposal spots, with the best time of day for each — and remember the golden rule: morning, almost every time.

1

The Chapel at Our Lady of La Leche

A little ivy-draped chapel on hushed, leafy grounds right on Matanzas Bay, with the Great Cross rising over the water. Quiet, sacred, and timeless — perfect if you want a proposal that feels deeply intentional.

Best TimeEarly morning, around sunrise. The grounds open east to the bay, so the sun rises over the water and warms the chapel from behind you.

An active, sacred shrine — gates open at 10am, so an early visit is the perfect call!

2

The Fountain at the Lightner Museum

Old-world charm with a fairytale fountain and gorgeous coquina walls — a little European pocket in the heart of downtown.

Best TimeMorning, around 9–10am — quiet streets and soft, even shade for true-to-color photos. Sunset is lovely too, with warm golden light washing over the coquina walls, but expect bigger downtown crowds and, in the warm months, a real chance of rain.
3

The Flagler College Courtyard Fountain

The Spanish Renaissance courtyard is pure jaw-drop — terracotta, towers, and an iconic fountain in the middle. One of the most beautiful spaces in the whole city.

Best TimeSunset. As the day softens, warm golden light spills across the terracotta and towers for that dreamy, glowing courtyard look. Mornings are quieter if you'd rather skip the crowds, but sunset is when this space really comes alive.

Flagler is a private campus — courtyard access is usually through a tour or arrangement, so confirm before planning a surprise here.

4

In Front of the Fort (Castillo de San Marcos)

Four hundred years of history right on the bay. The open green and seawall give you that dramatic, iconic St. Augustine backdrop.

Best TimeSunrise. The fort faces east over the water, so the sun rises right behind it — warm light, glassy water, and an empty fort before the crowds. Sunset glows beautifully on the west walls too, but you'll be sharing the lawn with more people, and in the warm months there's a real chance of rain.

Photos are welcome around the grounds and seawall, but not inside the fort itself.

5

Vilano Beach

Toes in the sand, ocean as far as you can see, and a little quieter than the main beaches — perfect for a private, just-the-two-of-you moment.

Best TimeSunrise, hands down. The sun comes straight up out of the Atlantic, so facing the water puts that warm glow right behind you. Sunset is soft and pastel here too, but it draws bigger crowds and, in the warm months, a real chance of rain. Either way, work in the gorgeous tall dune grass and the big rocks along the shore — they make for stunning, textured backdrops.
6

Washington Oaks Gardens

Mossy oaks, formal gardens, reflecting ponds, and a rose garden — plus a coquina rock beach across A1A. Romance on every path.

Best TimeMorning in spring/summer (cooler and storm-free); late-afternoon golden hour is lovely in the cooler months. Add the coquina rocks at sunrise.
7

Memorial Presbyterian Church — The Steps

Henry Flagler's masterpiece, with its turquoise dome and grand triple-arched entrance. A stunning, storybook backdrop.

Best TimeMorning — quiet streets, and the deep portico keeps the steps in gentle, even shade. Sunset brings a warm, golden glow to the facade and dome, though downtown is busier then. Weekday mornings or Saturday morning work best.

Sunday mornings aren't available (services), but weekday or Saturday mornings are perfect. Photos are welcome around the church, but not inside.

8

Memorial Presbyterian Church — The Courtyard

Tucked beside the church, the courtyard offers the same beautiful architecture with a little more privacy than the front steps.

Best TimeSame morning window — even, flattering shade with a bit more seclusion. Sunset adds a soft golden warmth here too. Weekday mornings or Saturday morning work best.

9

Magnolia Avenue

The famous tunnel of moss-draped oaks near the Fountain of Youth — a dreamy, storybook canopy that's pure St. Augustine romance and so on-brand for that light, airy look.

📍 Open in Google Maps
Best TimeWeekday morning — honestly, that's about the only safe window for a proposal here. Magnolia Avenue is a very active road, and you don't want to risk a car pulling up behind you and rushing the moment. Early on a weekday, it's calm enough to soak it in.

It's a live, two-way street, so safety and timing really matter here — we'll plan it carefully.

10

The Bayfront & Bridge of Lions

The Matanzas waterfront along Avenida Menéndez, with the historic bridge stretching across the water — downtown's most romantic stretch of shoreline.

📍 Open in Google Maps
Best TimeSunrise or sunset. At sunrise, the sun lifts straight out of the water behind the bridge for glowing, peaceful, crowd-free light. Sunset is gorgeous too, with warm color over downtown and the bridge lights flickering on — just know it draws bigger crowds, and in the warm months there's a real chance of rain.

Heads up: the marble lions have been removed for the sea wall rebuild, so they're not at the bridge right now — and there may be construction or closures in the area. We'll check on access before planning anything here.

11

St. Johns County Ocean Pier

A wide, open stretch of St. Augustine Beach with the long pier as a striking backdrop — plenty of room to wander and a relaxed, coastal feel.

📍 Open in Google Maps
Best TimeSunrise or sunset. The beach faces east, so sunrise brings the sun up out of the ocean for that warm, glowy backlight with the pier in silhouette. Sunset turns soft and pastel over the water — just expect more people, and in the warm months, a real chance of rain.
12

Palm Row

A hidden gem tucked right next to the Lightner Museum — a tiny, palm-lined lane of charming historic cottages that feels like a secret little pocket of the city. Quiet, romantic, and beautifully framed by the row of palms down the center.

Best TimeSunrise or sunset both work beautifully here. The palms and cottages catch a soft, warm glow at either end of the day, and because it's a tucked-away lane, it stays peaceful and uncrowded.
Good to Know

Proposal Planning FAQs

What's the best time of day to propose in St. Augustine?

Morning, almost every time. Downtown is still quiet around 9–10am, so you get the city nearly to yourselves and clean, people-free photos. In spring and summer, mornings also dodge Florida's afternoon thunderstorms. Waterfront spots glow at sunrise.

Should I propose at sunrise or sunset?

In the cooler months, sunset is genuinely gorgeous. But from late spring through summer, I'll be honest — a sunset proposal is a gamble. Florida's near-daily pop-up storms make it close to a coin flip (roughly 50/50) that it's raining at your scheduled sunset time, so I highly recommend going in the morning instead. If you do want sunset, keep the next morning open as a built-in reschedule window, or have a backup spot you love just as much.

Do you photograph surprise proposals?

Yes — we love it. We document the moment discreetly so it feels completely natural, and we can roll right into a mini engagement session after the "yes."

What if it rains?

Florida weather is fickle, so mornings are the safe bet. If you prefer an evening, have a Plan B spot you love or keep the following morning open to reschedule.

How do I keep it a surprise?

Anchor it to a reason to be there, like a casual photo session or dinner. Instead of telling your partner to dress up, just tell them what you're wearing. And loop in only the people who truly need to know.

How do I find out their ring size?

Borrow a ring they already wear and measure it, ask a trusted friend, or choose a resizable setting and adjust it later, together.
